Author Interview: Kyle West

Kyle West has written Apocalypse, and co-written Night Of The Necromancer .

1. What is your name and where do you call home?
My name is Kyle West. I’m from the small town of Lake Jackson, TX, though I now live in Oklahoma City.

2. What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or less words, what would you say?
Night of the Necromancer is an epic, choose-your-own-adventure zombie survival challenge.

3. Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
I am currently working on two book series. The first is called The Wasteland Chronicles, and I have recently published the first book in it, Apocalypse. My other series is a dark fantasy set in an alternate universe. That series will be called Dark Prophecies, and I’ve finished the first draft of the first novella in that one. It is currently untitled, but it is about a princess who develops dangerous magical abilities that she cannot control.

4. What or who inspired you to start writing? And how long have you been writing?
I have several influences. First, I’m inspired by a lot of my favorite authors, such as Stephen King, Robert Jordan, and Ken Follett. I like to read horror, science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. Second, I have a lot of real life influences. I’ve had a couple of writing teachers who have been highly encouraging, without whose influence I probably would not be here writing today.

5. Do you gift books to readers for book reviews?
I gift my book to bloggers, but as far as my friends, I make them pay… :P

6. Which is your favourite cover of all the books you have written?
I only have two books currently, but I really love the cover of my newest book, Apocalypse. It is perfect at capturing the post-apocalyptic tone of the book. I’m really a sucker for a good book cover, as I’m sure all readers are.

7. Is there anything you would change about your book covers?
I like both the covers. In the future, I’d like to have covers that are very colorful and cool looking. A good cover is very, very important.

8. How did you come up with the title for your book?
The title for Night of the Necromancer was tricky for us. It took a long time for us to settle on one, but both of us liked Night of the Necromancer. We added the subtitle “Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse?” because I thought it was very important for readers to know our book was a choose-your-own-adventure. The only downside is the title is insanely long, which is probably something I’ll steer from in the future.

9. Is there anything you would change about your book? And why?
On Night of the Necromancer, I’m pretty happy with the way it is. I think it might be cool to add some additional storylines, but it is already very long (much longer than any choose-your-own-adventure book I know about).

10. What is your opinion on ARCs?
I think ARC’s are a great way for to build buzz for a book before release. I’ve never personally tried them, mostly because I’m just now sticking my foot in the water as far as promotion goes. Eventually, I’d like to do some ARC’s and experiment and see if they work.

11. Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hardcovers or audiobooks?
I like paperbacks and hardbacks, though I mostly read in e-book format. And nothing can beat a good audiobook for a long trip.

12. Are you a self-published / Indie author?
I am definitely an indie author! Currently, only a few people know of me outside my friends and family. I’m working on changing that J.

13. Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so what was it?
I have read the Harry Potter series twice, I’ve read 1984 twice, and I’ve read several Wheel of Time books twice. I’ve also read The First Man in Rome twice, which is a historical fiction novel set in ancient Rome. I’ve also read London, by Edward Rutherford, twice.

14. Have you ever read a book just based on it’s cover?
Haven’t we all? I buy books on Kindle all the time just because of the cover. Especially if it’s cheap and it’s a nice cover, you don’t have much to lose. I know this as a reader, which is why as a writer it’s so important to me to have a really good cover.

15. Has the quality of the cover of a book ever put you off of reading it?
Yes, definitely. I won’t even look at the blurb. I know you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but we all do anyway…and a bad cover makes me wonder if other parts of the book might be bad, since the cover is such a crucial point.

16. What is your favourite film based on a book?
Hmm…definitely Lord of the Rings. All three of those movies I’ve seen about twenty thousand times. They are just so good.  Fellowship is probably my favorite.

17. What is your favourite book genre at the moment?
I’m really into dark fantasy. I’m reading The Dark Tower by Stephen King, as well as a few indie tittles. I mostly read indie, and since most indie books are in the $.99 - $3.99 range, it is really the best for my budget.

18. Do you have any advice for other writers? And what’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing?
My advice is to realize writing is a lot of work. You have to put in the hours both writing and promoting. And of course, to read.

19. Do you have any hobbies that aren’t related to reading & writing?
Really, my entire life right now seems to be dominated by both work and writing. Promoting also takes a lot of time. When I don’t do those things I like to go out to eat, run, watch TV or play video games. And of course, read.

Night Of The Necromancer: Can you survive the zombie apocalypse?
By Kyle West & Jelani Sims

You were a student just trying to survive college. Now, as zombies break down your front door, you must ask if you will survive the night.

You will need weapons. A vehicle. A group. A plan.

You must make all the right decisions to avoid a zombie's sharp teeth shredding you to bloody bits.

Will you rescue your overbearing ex-girlfriend, who broke up with you hours before the zombies arrived?

Will you trust the survivors you meet along the way?

Will you retreat to the country's little-used roads and creepy forests? Or fight your way through the city's streets, buildings, and subways?

Can you end the Necromancer's zombie reign of terror, or watch helplessly as the world disintegrates into his vision of madness and death?

If you are quick on your feet, you just might live to see another day. One wrong decision, you will end up as zombie food, or worse...a member of the undead.

Available at Amazon.co.uk.

Author Interview: Jelani Sims

Jelani Sims has co-written Night Of The Necromancer.

1. What is your name and where do you call home?
My name is Jelani Sims and I was born and raised in Houston, Texas.

2. Is there anything you would change about your book? And why?
There are always things that could be changed about one of my books or stories. Eventually, I have to just set it down and hope that it's in a great enough form and that other people can enjoy it.

3. Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hardcovers or audiobooks?
At the moment, I prefer ebooks. They help me read faster, they are easier and light to carry around, and it's the dominant format of the book that Kyle West and I published.

4. Are you a self-published / Indie author?
I am currently a self-published indie author. I would like to eventually get published "for real" one day, but I am currently enjoying the experience of self-publishing.

5. Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so what was it?
I usually don't read books more than once, but I have read the Resident Evil series by S. D. Perry on several occasions, just because I love her writing style and seek to mimic it in my own writing.

6What is your favourite film based on a book?
Carrie is definitely my favorite film based off of a book. I love both the original version from the '70s and the remake for television. I'm also excited to see the most recent remake, which is coming out later this year.

7. What is your favourite book genre at the moment?
My favorite book genre at the moment, every moment in fact, is horror and suspense. I've been reading it since I was a kid and I never tire of it.

8. What book are you reading at the moment? And in what format?
At the moment, I am reading 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill in ebook format.

9. Do you have any advice for other writers? And what’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing?
The best advice I've been given as a writer and the advice that I would give to other writers, is to write and read. The only way to become a better writer is by reading voraciously and writing every day.

10. Do you have any hobbies that aren’t related to reading & writing?
I love singing and dancing, and have a soft spot for musical theatre and music in general. I take a dance class regularly at a studio in Norman OK, where I currently live.

Author Interview: J.D. Watts

J. D. Watts has written Convergence, Induction and Maelstrom.

1. What is your name and where do you call home?
I’m J. D. Watts and I live in Central Illinois near Peoria.

2. What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or less words, what would you say?
Maelstrom is the final, heart breaking, rollercoaster ride of a story to complete the Children of Creation Series.

3. What or who inspired you to start writing? And how long have you been writing?
I’ve always had a creative mind, but never really successfully attempted to write until after my second child was born in 2008. I’d read Twilight and had some ideas so I started playing with the medium of fanfiction. I did that for two years before I got brave enough to venture into writing my own story from scratch. It has been an amazing journey from those first attempts 4 years ago to now!

4. How did you come up with the cover? Who designed the cover of your book?
I was actually looking around on a stock photography website and stumbled across the photo for the cover of Maelstrom and fell in love immediately. We have a lovely lady by the name of Jennifer Maguire at The Writer’s Coffee Shop Publishing that designs our covers for us!

5. How did you come up with the title for your book?
From the beginning I knew that this book would have the title that would relate in some way to a storm. I threw around Tempest but that’s too well known and has become a bit cliché. As soon as I stumbled across Maelstrom, though, I knew it was perfect.

6. Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so what was it?
Absolutely. In fact I’ve read whole series more than once, namely the Vampire Academy series as well as the Mortal Instruments series. (I’ve got a huge love of YA supernatural fiction)

7. Have you ever bought a specific edition of a book because of it’s cover? (For example a UK, US or Canadian version)
No, but I have almost purchased a favorite book after the movie adaptions came out because I loved the images of the movie on the front.

8. What is your favourite film based on a book?
The Lord of the Rings series.

9. What books have made it onto your wishlist recently? And why?
The next book in the Divergent series is first on my list. I’m DYING to find out what happens next and it’s an amazing series! The next books in the Moral Instruments, Clockwork Prince, and Bloodlines series are up there too! That’s the one bad thing about starting a series that isn’t already complete…I HATE waiting for the next book to come out!

10. If you could invite any four celebrities (alive or dead) to your dinner party, who would you invite and why?
Jesus because it would be so amazing to spend time with him and I would have a gazillion questions to ask him! Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson because they seem like really awesome down to earth people and would love to hear the secret to keeping their marriage going for so many years, especially in Hollywood. Bing Crosby so I could ask him to record at least 20 more amazing, iconic Christmas songs just for me!

11. Do you have any advice for other writers? And what’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing?
My biggest bit of advice is to keep on writing. This is one of those business where practice makes if not perfect then continually better. The more you write and work with editors, the cleaner and more concise your writing becomes. Don’t become discouraged if it takes some time and effort, because in the end it is all worth it.

12. Do you have any hobbies that aren’t related to reading & writing?
I’ve been known to bake and decorate cakes from time to time, though I’m strictly amateur!

13. Where can your readers follow you?

All of the links below are good but probably the best is my facebook fan page!

Author Interview: Elisabeth Wheatley

Elisabeth Wheatley has written Fanged Princess, The Key Of Amatahns and The Secrets Of The Vanmars.

1. What is your name and where do you call home?
My name is Elisabeth Wheatley and I proudly call the Texas Hill Country my part of the world.

2. Do you have a pen name?
I considered it, but no, I don't have one.

3. What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or less words, what would you say?
My most recent book is Fanged Princess and it is the story of a teenage vampire trying to protect the love of her brother's life.

4. Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
Oh, I have plans for many more books and yes, Fanged Princess is the opener to a novella series with many more installments in the works!

5. What or who inspired you to start writing? And how long have you been writing?
The first "book" I ever wrote was an extremely cheesy piece of fan-fiction for my favorite picture book when I was five or six. I'm not sure what inspired me to write it, but it certainly started something.

6. Do you gift books to readers for book reviews?
Gladly! I give readers books for review at every opportunity.

7. How did you come up with the cover? Who designed the cover of your book?
Well, for Fanged Princess, we wanted something Gothic that said "vampire," but not too cliche. After browsing through some images, we decided on the one that is now on the cover. I actually handled all the design, though my publisher took care of the design for my first book.

8. Which is your favourite cover of all the books you have written?
I have to say my favorite belongs to Fanged Princess. (Sucker for all things purple.)

9. Is there anything you would change about your book covers?
I think I would like to go with a different cover image for my second book, The Secrets of the Vanmars. But what's done is done and I try not to obsess over details like that.

10. Would you have different book covers for different countries?
Right now the covers are all the same. But maybe one day!

11. How did you come up with the title for your book?
For my other series, the Argetallam Saga, coming up with titles has been relatively easy, but with Fanged Princess, I had more of a challenge. I wanted some hint as to the vampires in the story and I wanted to use something that no one else had. After much mixing and matching of different words that pertained to the story, I came up with Fanged Princess.

12. Is there anything you would change about your book? And why?
Right now there isn't anything I would change about Fanged Princess, but I have every confidence that in a few months I'll go back and read it and wonder "why did I write it like that?"

13. Do you have a book trailer? And what are your thoughts on book trailers?
Yes, I do have a book trailer for all three of my novels. I think book trailers can be a great way to portray a book's "feel" with animations, music, and images. If done right, they can make people more excited than a cover or blurb alone could. (Like the trailer for Throne of Glass, that's the best one I've ever seen!)

14. What is your opinion on ARCs?
I've read a few ARCs for other authors and I think they can be excellent ways of starting "the buzz" whilst the novel is still in progress. But I think I'd prefer to read finished copies myself, simply because I'm picky.

15. Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hardcovers or audiobooks?
Usually, I prefer paperbacks, but I've recently developed a fixation with free Kindle books and now I can't stop downloading them.

16. Are you a self-published / Indie author?
I am not self-published, though I am an indie. I am with a small press with only a few authors that provides the editorial and some of the design services, though I have absolutely nothing against the self-published authors and am quite a fan a many of them.

17. Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so what was it?
The only books I have ever read cover-to-cover more than once are the five in Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet. The books could be read as stand-alones, but I completely and wholly adore that series.

18. Have you ever bought a specific edition of a book because of it’s cover? (For example a UK, US or Canadian version)
No. I tend to like the US covers better anyway.

19. Have you ever read a book just based on it’s cover?
Um...I plead the Fifth?

20. Has the quality of the cover of a book ever put you off of reading it?
Can I plead the Fifth again?

21. What is your favourite film based on a book?
That would be a tie between The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Inkheart, and John Carter. They are all such masterpieces!

22. What is your favourite book genre at the moment?
YA fantasy! It's been my favorite for years and I think I'll always have a tender place in my heart for the magical and sorcerous.

23. What books have made it onto your wishlist recently? And why?
Well, I'm dying to read the next books in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Mass and The Captive series by Erica Stevens. Other than that, there are far too many on my TBR to count!

24. What book are you reading at the moment? And in what format?
Right now, I'm reading several books on my Kindle app. I just finished The Dracian Legacy by Priya Kanaparti for a blog tour. It was pretty darn good!

25. If you could invite any four celebrities (alive or dead) to your dinner party, who would you invite and why?
Ooh! C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Madeleine L'Engle, and Lloyd Alexander. (Do you see a theme here?)

26. Do you have any advice for other writers? And what’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing?
I really don't do good with advice. I would just say what everybody's been telling me--write now, edit later. (It's so hard to actually do it!)

27. Do you have any hobbies that aren’t related to reading & writing?
Well, I train and show dogs, am a Celtic Thunder and general music enthusiast, and am in training to become chauffeur for my little brothers.

28. Where can your readers follow you?

Author Interview: B. Kristin McMichael

B. Kristin McMichael has written To Stand Beside Her.

1. What is your name and where do you call home?
B. Kristin McMichael, Central Ohio for the time being- I am looking for a new job, so the location may change in the next year if I am lucky!!

2. Do you have a pen name?
I am publishing under my middle name as I am published in the scientific community under my first name. (I am a scientist and part of that requires me to publish articles in scientific journals each year)

3. What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or less words, what would you say?
To Stand Beside Her:  To be the best courier, Leila follows three rules: always work alone, never stay in one place too long, and never fall in love. Too bad she didn't follow her own advice.

4. Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
My second book which is the start of a new series is going to the editor at the end of January. TSBH book is a stand-alone novel, so right now there are no plans for more with this one.

5. What or who inspired you to start writing? And how long have you been writing?
Honestly, I have been writing as long as I can remember. I have sheets of paper from first and second grade where I have stories (though only five sentences long). I have always written, but with life- college took over and I had no time. It wasn’t until after I got my PhD, that I decided to try again. My husband’s work was on Saturday mornings, so I had the house to myself. After four weekends alone, I had this novel. There were no plans to actually have anyone read my novels, but with his pushing, I am putting it out there.

6. Do you gift books to readers for book reviews?
Yes, this is my first novel and I am trying to get started, so I am more than happy to have people review my books. Right now I don’t have a print book (still working on that) but I have ebooks that I will gladly give out for reviewers.

7. How did you come up with the cover? Who designed the cover of your book?
Char of Wicked Cover Designs made the cover. There were details from the book, but I was pretty open to anything. I wanted more of a feeling than specific book cover and told her to do anything. I think she did a great job.

8. How did you come up with the title for your book?
This was very hard. This book was name “unnamed” for the whole time I was writing it. I don’t actually remember how I came up with the name. Once I made it though, it fit and worked well.

9. What is your opinion on ARCs?
ARCs are a nice way to give reviewers a book before it is published. Reading an ARC, you have to know there will be a few mistakes, but it is nice for the author, as they can get it out there earlier, and the reviewer, who can read a book before it is out there.

10. Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hardcovers or audiobooks?
I am hooked on ebooks. I got a nook for my birthday just about a year ago and read almost a hundred books on it the last year that I have been reviewing books. I can put twenty books on it and take it anywhere. It is nice as you can just pull it out anywhere and read without having to worry about if you are at the end of a novel and need to bring two along.

11. Are you a self-published / Indie author?
At this point I am self-publishing. I have one book that I am out querying for an agent, but this year will be an adventure in self-publishing. I plan to release at least 4 novels this year and see how it goes.

12. Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so what was it?
Yes. I do that. I mostly skim it a second time though, or if it has been years, I can reread it. I can’t even list how many times I have done that. I do it now when I find a book that I especially like the writing. I read a second time to analyze it and try to find what it was that I like so much.

13. Have you ever bought a specific edition of a book because of its cover? (For example a UK, US or Canadian version)
No, but I hate when they do that. I read a book once based on everyone saying to read it. The US cover was horrible, and I really didn’t want to read it. Turned out it was a great book, just a bad cover. When I mentioned it to people, they said, check out the UK cover. It was so much better. I have to wonder if they would have sold more US copies with a better cover.

14. Have you ever read a book just based on its cover?
I will open a book based on its cover, but if the writing is bad I will not read it. I have collected over one hundred books for free this last year on amazon. I review most of them, but if the book is badly written, I won’t continue, no matter the cover.

15. What is your favourite film based on a book?
I don’t really like any movies based on books. I have enough of an imagination that I don’t want another picture of something. Many times it is not how I pictured it and then I am disappointed with the movie. The only way I even enjoy a movie based on a book now is if I read the book afterwards and not before.

16. What is your favourite book genre at the moment?
I am into fantasy. I like sci-fic also, but it is a lot of dystopian right now. I like that but prefer more options in my sci-fi. Fantasy is filled with options right now (though there is an emphasis on vampires, faeries, angels, and werewolves- which I have been saying I will not read another of any of those but end up doing just that!)

17. What book are you reading at the moment? And in what format?
I am reading a few: I just finished The Ballad of Aramei by JA Redmerski today and plan to start Existence by Abbi Glines. I am hoping to get ahold of I am Number Four to give that a shot also. I read up to 2-4 books a week sometimes, so maybe I’ll be onto something else soon. I try to get the e-books of them but will settle for a library book if needed.

18. Do you have any hobbies that aren’t related to reading & writing?
I pretty much do the “mom thing” type of hobbies. I cook/bake, sew, etc. I have two little kids, so most free time is spent playing with them. There is not any more time left over for other hobbies.

19. Where can your readers follow you?
